Why Timing Matters in Atlanta
Atlanta sits in USDA Zone 7b to 8a with mild winters and hot humid summers. Good for growing trees but also for fungi and insects that attack fresh pruning cuts.
January to February: The Best Window
Late winter is ideal. Trees are dormant, insects are inactive, and you can see structure clearly without leaves.
- Oaks: Late January through mid-February only. Oak wilt risk March through October.
- Crape Myrtles: Late February before new growth.
- Maples: While dormant to avoid heavy sap flow.
March to April: Hazard Limbs Only
Spring flush is underway. Remove only dead or hazardous limbs.
May to August: Mostly Hands Off
Hot humid conditions allow fungal diseases to flourish. Only remove dead, broken, or storm-damaged limbs.
