Atlanta Has a Tree Ordinance
Atlanta’s Urban Forestry ordinance protects trees on developed private property. Getting caught without a permit can result in fines and required replanting at significant cost.
When Do You Need a Permit?
Generally for any tree with a trunk diameter of 6 inches or more at breast height on a developed lot. Not required for dead, diseased, or imminent-hazard trees.
The Permit Process
- Submit application via Atlanta’s Office of Buildings
- Pay the fee, approximately $75 for residential properties
- Proceed after permit is issued

Fines and mandatory replanting that can far exceed $75, plus complications for future permits and property sales.
